As part of the Jubilee celebrations, Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez called on Hondurans to participate responsibly in the country’s public life and to carefully consider clear political proposals ahead of electoral processes. His message focused on the importance of choosing leaders committed to the common good and justice.
During his address, the cardinal stressed the need for citizens to examine candidates’ proposals rather than basing their decisions solely on political or personal affinities. In this regard, he argued that political participation should be guided by integrity, truth, prudence, preparation, and commitment to society.
Rodríguez also warned about the harmful effects of corruption, describing it as a practice capable of weakening institutions and undermining Honduras’ development. Against this backdrop, he urged the public to promote a culture of responsibility in government and reject conduct that places private interests above the well-being of the population.
The cardinal further emphasized that citizens have a fundamental role in shaping the country’s future. From his perspective, voting is a responsibility that requires carefully evaluating those seeking public office and the ideas they put forward to address society’s needs.
The announcement arrived against the backdrop of a continuing political and electoral discussion within Honduras. The Catholic Church has consistently emphasized the significance of mindful, peaceful, and democratic civic involvement.
Cardinal Rodríguez’s reflection was also connected to the social dimension of the Christian faith. In his view, spiritual commitment should not be separated from citizens’ responsibilities within society, but should instead be reflected in actions aimed at promoting justice, solidarity, and the common good.
